William G. McAtee Book

Milton Winter on October 20, 2011

William G. McAtee, a ministerial son of St. Andrew Presbytery, has written a book, Transformed: A White Mississippi Pastor's Journey into Civil Rights and Beyond (foreword by William F. Winter), which tells a story as few can tell it of a pastor's journey into deep social change--his own struggle to deal with his acquiescence in the injustices and discrimination against black people in that era, as well as his call to speak out for change while pastor of the Presbyterian congregation at Columbia, Miss., and the wider community. A fourth-generation Mississippian and former pastor of the Amory Presbyterian Church, Bill later served twenty-six years as an executive for Transylvania Presbytery in Lexington, KY, where he now officially "retired," but devotes much of his time to writing. As the editors of the book's publisher, the University Press of Mississippi observe, "This personal account of this transformation reminds the reader that no generation can ignore the past or rest comfortably on its progress towards tolerance, equality, and justice." Signings are scheduled in Columbia, Hattiesburg, and Jackson, Miss.--For further information contact Milton Winter, Director of the Resource Center and Historian of St. Andrew Presbytery (662) 252-2662.
